Not every Olympic Village becomes a ghost town

After the crowds disperse and the athletes fly home, some Olympic venues are left in a state of limbo, enshrined in sports history but without a future purpose. Just six months after the Winter Olympics in Sochi, for example, the Olympic Village already looked like a ghost town. Similar architecture ruin porn can be seen in Beijing, Athens, and Rio de Janeiro.

But while there’s a constant debate over whether hosting the Olympics is worth it, there are a few cities that have had long-term success with venues built for the games. In these cases, ski jump centers still host thousands of athletes each year, and huge sports arenas now function as multi-sport community centers.

In honor of the Winter Games currently underway in Pyeongchang, South Korea, we’ve rounded up six Olympic venue success stories from summer and winter games in the past 25 years.

With a population of around 26,000 people, it would be easy to think that the small Norwegian town of Lillehammer would be unable to maintain the giant facilities required for the Olympics. But Lillehammer is in many ways the gold standard for post-Olympic success, with nearly all of the venues still in use. The Lysgardsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena—located directly in town and home of the opening ceremony—is used year-round, as are many other venues. The city also successfully held the Winter Youth Olympics in 2016.

Check out where all the Olympic magic will happen

Beginning February 9, athletes from around the world will flock to Pyeongchang—a rugged, mountainous region in the Gangwon Province of South Korea—for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

To prepare for the games, South Korea has built six new venues and refurbished six others in three different areas in the province: Pyeongchang, an area known for winter sports and home to the Olympic Stadium; Jeongseon, a former mining area home to the downhill skiing courses; and Gangneung, a resort town and bustling port city home to the ice skating, speed skating, and hockey arenas.

Like any Olympics, Pyeongchang has made a few thorny headlines in the lead-up to the Games. Escalating military tension might be scaring away tourists, organizers have banned Russia from competing, and some worry that Pyeongchang’s frigid temperatures could pose problems for both athletes and spectators.

The good news? Officials report that all 13 venues and the Olympic Village are ready to go, an impressive feat considering that organizers of the recent Sochi and Rio Games were scrambling to finish hotels and venues on time.

In addition to the new venues, many Olympic athletes and visitors will arrive in Gangwon Province on a new $3.7 billion express train that just opened between Seoul and Pyeongchang. Instead of a taxing three-hour drive, the Korail train journey will take just under 1.5 hours.

To get pumped for all the excitement to come, we’ve rounded up the details and best photos of the major Olympic venues. From a giant stadium to snow-covered ski runs, here’s where all the Olympic magic will happen.

Built to hold 35,000 people, the pentagonal Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympics. Located about one mile northeast of Alpensia Ski Resort, the stadium is a temporary structure that will be dismantled after the Olympics are over.

In recent months, the stadium has come under criticism because it was built without a roof or heat to save time and money. In November, seven people reportedly suffered hypothermia while attending a concert at the stadium. In order to alleviate the freezing temperatures and cold winds forecasted during the Olympics, officials will provide each spectator at the opening and closing ceremonies with a small blanket, a rain coat, and a heating pad.

You’ll want to see this

Whether used for next-level real estate videos or futuristic food deliveries or aerial taxis, drones have staked out a place of constant fascination in our world. And last night, for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, they soared to new heights in an impressive light show blending technology and art.

Indeed, the 1,218-drone flight was the largest display of Intel’s foot-long Shooting Star drones to date and sets a new world record for the most unmanned vehicles airborne at the same time. You might remember a similar spectacle at Lady Gaga’s 2017 Super Bowl half-time show, but that only involved about 300 drones.

While the scale of the Olympics drone show was unprecedented and surely magical to watch, the slightly less sexy fine print is that it was a prerecorded performance, mainly to avoid the harsh weather conditions expected during the opening ceremony. Intel does still plan to put on smaller, 300-drone live shows every night for the medal ceremonies.

So how does it all work? Wired explains it nicely: “After animators draw up the show using 3-D design software, each individual drone gets assigned to act as a kind of aerial pixel, filling in the 3-D image against the night sky.”

To see just what kind of images the thousand-drone squad will create, tune in to a delayed broadcast of the opening ceremony tonight at 8 p.m. ET. on NBC.

An autonomous vacuum cleaner has already won the hearts of the Olympic press corps

A fleet of adorable bulbous robots has been deployed across the Olympic venues in Pyeongchang, South Korea, providing a range of services from offering gate information in the airport to translation, serving drinks, and more than a dozen other functions, according to Olympic organizers. But it’s the vacuum cleaners that have already won over journalists.

Roaming the halls of the Main Press Centre, the washing-machine-sized bots are constantly sucking up stray debris and unwittingly drawing the curious eyes—and affections—of the press.
And the roofless stadium won’t be any help

Pyeongchang, South Korea, is prepped for the 2018 Winter Olympics: The venues are ready to go, the athletes have arrived, and early reports are that everything in the Olympic Village is running smoothly—save for an outbreak of norovirus. The main concern before Friday’s opening ceremony? The cold.

Built to hold 35,000 people, the open-air pentagonal Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympics. The stadium is a temporary structure that will be dismantled after the Olympics are over, and one of the ways organizers saved money and time was by building the structure without a roof or heating.

That could be a problem. In a news conference on Wednesday, the Korean Meteorological Administration reported that at 8:00 p.m. local time in Pyeongchang—when the opening ceremony is set to begin—it should be between 23 and 28 degrees Fahrenheit. The agency says that’s about normal for February temperatures in the region, where lows regularly drop to 14 degrees.

Those temperatures might not seem that bad to many in the United States, but Pyeongchang’s notoriously cold winds will add an additional factor for the crowds. At the opening ceremony rehearsal on Saturday, the wind chill lowered temperatures to minus 9 degrees Fahrenheit. And winter athletes—accustomed to years of cold-weather sports—have already taken to social media with comments about the icy weather.

It's only about -5 degrees, but the wind makes if feel absolutely Baltic.

That type of cold can be dangerous; this past November, seven people reportedly suffered hypothermia while attending a concert at the Olympic Stadium while others huddled in the bathrooms to keep warm.

In acknowledgement of the potential cold, officials will provide each spectator at the opening and closing ceremonies with a small blanket, a rain coat, and a heating pad. The ceremony has been cut to a quick two-hour march instead of the typical four-hour procession, and organizers have also installed heat shelters, large heaters, and windshields to try and make spectators more comfortable. U.S. team athletes will beat the windchill thanks to heated jackets designed by Ralph Lauren.

If it seems bizarre that cold might be a factor at the Winter Olympics, that’s because over the past few years the Winter Games have been plagued by warm temperatures, not cold ones. In 2014 in Sochi—a sub-tropical city in Russia—athletes faced the warmest-ever Winter Olympics, with temperatures hotter than some days at the London Summer Olympics.

Vancouver was also an abnormally warm Winter Games, as was Torino, Italy in 2006. In fact, there hasn’t been a wintry Winter Games since Lillehammer in 1994, which was allegedly the coldest games on record. Lillehammer clocked in the lowest recorded low temperature at a Winter Games at 12 degrees Fahrenheit.

Depending on how things shape up in Pyeongchang, the 2018 Winter Olympics could rival those temperatures.

A dark structure has landed in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and it’s almost too black to be seen properly. Designed by London-based architect Asif Khan as part of Hyundai Motor’s global mobility initiative, the pavilion is coated in Vantablack VBx2, a version of what is considered the darkest pigment in the world (and is now owned by artist Anish Kapoor).

The simple temporary structure, which is located inside Olympic Park, measures 10 meters high (32.8 feet) with a 35-meter-by-35-meter footprint and features a steel construction and a parabolic facade that is studded with thin rods with tiny lights at the tip, creating the atmosphere of being in space.

Because of the super-black spray-paint coating the pavilion, it is nearly impossible for the human eye to make out the contours of the building. In a statement, Khan described his vision:

From a distance the structure has the appearance of a window looking into the depths of outer space. As you approach it, this impression grows to fill your entire field of view. So on entering the building, it feels as though you are being absorbed into a cloud of blackness.

But entering the pavilion, one is brought into a seemingly new dimension. A large white room clad in Corian creates an immersive water installation, in which 25,000 water droplets are released every minute and travel along carved channels until reaching a central pool.

The pavilion was commissioned by Hyundai Motors in association with its Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles and opens on February 9.

With a massive infinity-sign shape, cascading terraces, and a suspended pool, the design was exactly the kind of outrageous architecture one might expect to see built for the drama-filled international sporting event.

Except it was probably never meant to be more than provocative imagery. The 2018 Games begin this week and, so far, there’s been no further updates on the project. What does exist is a bona fide starchitect hotel completed well ahead of the opening ceremony, designed by Pritzker Prize winner Richard Meier.

Located on the coast of Gangneung, the seaside resort town home to the Olympic ice skating, speed skating, and hockey arenas (and the proposed “infinity sign” hotel if it were real), the Seamarq stays true to Meier’s form, showing off his signature affinity for geometry, natural light, and the color white.

The hotel overlooks the East Sea, Gyeongpo Lake, and the Taebaek mountains, emerging from the land and water as an orderly pile of glass, concrete, and stone. The structure loosely follows the topography of the surroundings, placing a trapezoidal 11-story tower on a four-story banquet hall base. Almost all of the rooms have ocean views, and the public spaces, especially the deck and infinity pool that seem to flow right into the water, are defined by a clean expansiveness.

In a press release, Meier said the spaces are “in many ways related” to some of his early residential designs, such as the Smith House (1967) and the Douglas House (1973), because of the “open living space, a great deal of transparency, and an openness to the nature around the site.”

The Seamarq is Meier’s first project in South Korea and was commissioned as part of a plan to revitalize the region ahead of the Games. According to the hotel’s website, it’s also the country’s first “luxtige” hotel (that is “luxury” and “prestige,” an example of “Konglish” monikers apparently rampant in the local real estate industry). Last month, it got a shoutout as part of the Pyeongchang entry in the New York Times’s “52 Places to Go in 2018“ list.

As these Games begin, the athletes are certainly lucky that organizers managed to finish all the venues and competitor accommodations in time, but so are the visitors who will be staying at the Seamarq. Just look at the views.

The wee abode was designed to have a minimal impact on its verdant surroundings

The 2018 Winter Olympics are set to begin this week in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and among the venues and accommodations constructed in anticipation of the Games is this impressive eco-friendly tiny house.

Built to host visitors to events based in the Gangneung area, the gabled dwelling, named the “Tiny House of Slow Town”, packs in a windowed living room, bathroom, kitchenette, and sleeping loft. Designed by firms The Plus Partners and DNC Architects, the building has a stark black exterior that contrasts beautifully with its warm, interior wood paneling.

Large windows dominate two sides of the main living space, which totals 213 square feet. An alternating tread stair saves space, while the steeply rising roofline creates ample headroom in the bedroom.

The home was designed to sit within the area’s natural landscapes without any disturbances. It was also built with modular, eco-friendly materials to leave minimal environmental impact itself.

Because Gangwon, the host province of the Games, may lack sufficient accommodation for the anticipated influx of visitors, the “Slow Town” initiative also included plans to design additional small wooden residences like this one to provide sustainable housing during the event. In December 2017, The Plus Partners indeed shared photos of similar compact gabled dwellings, as well as larger-sized models, built near the site of the original tiny house.
