This full-size motorhome has a longer range, but is it enough?

Eight months ago, the world’s first completely electric motorhome debuted at a German trade show. With a range of 124 miles, the camper showed that while the RV industry continues to work towards more eco-friendly designs, the big limitation is range. Love campers and trailers? Come join our community group.

Now, that same zero-emissions RV is on the market with a longer range and interior photos, to boot. At the 2019 Dusseldorf Caravan Salon, the WOF Iridium debuted with a whopping 249 mile-range with the motorhome’s highest battery pack. Dusseldorf also allowed camper lovers a first glimpse inside the Iridium, although the layout is pretty standard.

The Iridium features a dry bathroom and shower, kitchen, and a split double bed. A dining lounge in the front of the camper can seat five thanks to the swivel front cab seats, a dual-seat rear bench, and a side seat. Other amenities include an awning, navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Iridium EV is the brainchild of two German companies, ElektroFahrzeuge Stuttgart (called EFA-S, an electric vehicle retrofitter) and WOF, a camper van manufacturer. WOF contributed their commercial vehicle chassis while EFA-S provided the drivetrain and battery technology. The E-camper’s bodywork comes from the Swiss camper van manufacturer Maurer Fahrzeugbau.

And while it’s great to see the interior of the motorhome, it’s the expanded range that is making waves. Real life testing will be necessary to see how close drivers can get to the newly advertised range of 249 miles, but that’s a lot more than the recently announced Winnebago Industries commercial RV that only has a range of 85-125 miles per charge.

The camper most similar to the Iridium EV is probably the Nissan e-NV200, a zero-emission, factory-built camper that’s completely electric. But this pop-up camper isn’t a full-size motorhome, and it also comes with a 124-mile range before it needs to charge.

All of this begs the question: is 249 miles enough? Probably not. While that range could possibly work in more densely populated areas of Europe, any electric RV for the North American market would need to have a range closer to 350-400 miles to compete with standard motorhomes.

Price is also a point of contention, as the Iridium costs significantly more than non-electric campers with similar features. The 249-mile Iridium flagship will list at approximately $219,000, while a 186-mile version will cost $188,000. Deliveries of the new vehicles will start in early 2020, and the Iridium will only be for sale in Europe.

Still, there’s no doubt that the industry as a whole is heading to electrification, a good thing as the world lessens its dependence on cars and looks to combat climate change.

The concept RV boasts a rear deck perfect for vistas

There’s a common lament in the North American RV industry that all the cool campers can be found in Europe. And while the U.S. is slowly rolling out more innovative and interesting RVs, it’s true that—as Airstream CEO Bob Wheeler put it—“Europe is about 15 years ahead of us in terms of design.” Love campers and trailers? Come join our community group!

So it’s no surprise, really, that the most innovative camper van we’ve seen in a while just debuted at the biggest camper trade show in the world: Düsseldorf Caravan Salon. The annual massive event showcases just about every type of camper imaginable, from an RV that’s also a boat to a two-bedroom tiny house.

This year at Düsseldorf, the Erwin Hymer Group debuted the VisionVenture concept. Built on a Mercedes chassis, the VisionVenture is a forward-thinking camper that looks more like a high-end apartment than a striped-down adventure rig.

To accomplish this, the camper’s interior uses warm bamboo, gray felt, and leather, mixing woods with other materials to add interest. The living area is located in the rear with two white sofas and a center dining table that folds down below the passenger-side bench. The stand-out feature of the living room is the panoramic rear window and large side windows. Fold out the rear door, drop a lower gate and the van boasts its own rear deck—complete with slide-out electric grill.

It’s an impressive lounge area, and the kitchen goes even further with a flush cooktop, sink, refrigerator, and ample storage. The styling is fresh too, with modular, deck-like wall paneling that works to hang plants or cooking equipment as needed. Integrated next to the kitchen is a compact slate-colored staircase—reminiscent of tiny house design—that boasts storage, motion-activated lighting, and access to an inflatable pop-up sleeping area. The upstairs bed sleeps two and takes advantage of big views through the rear roll-up window.

As if the lounge, rear tailgate, and sleeping quarters weren’t innovative enough, Hymer also rethinks the camper van bathroom. Transforming bathrooms are a growing trend, and the VisionVenture van boasts a rolling wall and rotating vanity sink to create a separate rain shower that’s removed from the sink and toilet. A laptop work station in the front of the cab, four-wheel-drive, and roof-mounted solar round out the long list of amenities.

Like other concept campers, the VisionVenture isn’t in production and you won’t be able to buy it (even in Europe) any time soon. But its design could show where campers are headed.

First, the rear lounge area and the pull-out grill both capitalize on everything #VanLife is about: enjoying the outdoors. Second, it’s fun to see how tiny house stairs could be incorporated into van life, similar to the cozy bed nooks in this home-like camper. And lastly, the interior design of the van feels fresh—miles away from the tired RV color schemes and boring design so prevalent in the U.S. Light, airy, and with plenty of style, if this is the future of #VanLife, we’re here for it.

The slide-out kitchen can be used indoors or out

The wonder of innovative camper design is that at first glance, some trailers or RVs don’t look like much. But once you push a button or flip or switch, the magic happens. Love campers and trailers? Come join our community group.

We’ve written about plenty of awesome, expanding, modular trailers before. This one, for example, spins out to reveal a huge party deck. The tiny Tipoon trailer grows to three times its size in seconds. This high-tech camper unfolds to reveal a two-bedroom tiny house, and we’d be remiss to forget the expandable camper that slides out of the back of a Sprinter.

Today we’re highlighting the iCamp from the Dutch company Udo Camp. In its travel tow position, the iCamp looks a bit like a smushed sports car, with a flat top and a shapely coup-like rear. But once you get to camp, you push a button on a remote control and the camper rises to 6.5 feet in about 30 seconds thanks to an electrically actuated roof. You can see it in action in the video below.

The result is a boxy, roomy camper that can fit a crowd for entertaining or a family for sleep. The camper’s front walls can be used open or covered with mosquito netting, and screen windows on either end of the camper allow for airflow. In poor weather you’re protected by the weatherproof TenCate fabric on the ceilings or on the wall panels that come down when needed.

The interior is spacious thanks to the 6.5-foot headspace and a 14.4-foot length. A large seating area includes a wraparound sofa and a two-panel removable table that can be used for dining or entertainment. When you’re ready to sleep, the tabletops convert into a bed for two adults. The other side of the tent includes a slightly smaller bed that Udo Camp reports is better for an adult and a child or two children.

But unlike other pop-up campers, the interior section of the iCamp doesn’t include a fully-built out kitchen. “What? No kitchen?!” you ask. Rest assured, the iCamp includes a slide-out kitchen below the front cushions on the second bed.

If you want to cook inside, you just lift the cushions and kitchen lids. Or—and this is what we’d be doing most of the time—slide out the kitchen through the external hatch, drop down the support leg, and enjoy the outdoors. The slide-out unit includes a four-burner gas stove, a sink, and a 40-liter fridge. And probably our favorite part: The slide-out design means that you can access your fridge without having to pop-up the entire camper.

Modern amenities combine with vintage style

While we love the modern look of today’s newest and most innovative campers, there’s something magical about the look and style of vintage campers. Owning a vintage Volkswagen bus or travel trailer, however, can be hard thanks to never-ending maintenance and pricey repair costs. Love campers and trailers? Come join our community group.

The iconic German camper van manufacturer, Westfalia, hopes to solve this problem with the Kepler Sixty, a retro VW camper van set to debut in 2019. Recently on view at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon—the world’s biggest camper show—the Sixty uses the Volkswagen T6 as its base and stands out thanks to its red and white, two-tone paintwork and fabrics.

Designed to provide modern comforts with retro style, the interior features a compact kitchen and cooking area with a sink, fridge, propane stove, and lots of convenient under-cabinet storage. A table pulls out to seat four easily—two front swivel seats help—and the bench seat moves forward and backwards depending on your needs.

The two-person rear bench seat coverts into a small double bed and a second double bed fits in the pop-top, allowing the Sixty to sleep four. Shades pull up to allow for privacy at night, LED lighting keeps the mood right, and a rear cabinet area allows for even more storage. An on-demand hot water shower is accessed from the back of the van for outdoor showers, and the rear storage area can still fit a bike if you store it crosswise.

Like many cool campers built in Europe, the Westfalia Kepler Sixty won’t be sold in the United States and will cost a cool €61,000 across the pond. But it’s always fun to see how companies are incorporating old and new into stunning, mobile homes on the go.

Watch movies from your bed or from the campfire

The small camper van sector of the RV industry checks all the right boxes. Small and nimble but with enough space to haul two to four people on weekend getaways, they are often an affordable and practical solution for anyone looking for a camper. And although many Americans pine after the Volkswagen California—which isn’t sold in the U.S.—and are excited by new vans like the Envy Recon, you don’t necessarily see a lot of innovation in this camper size. Love campers and trailers? Come join our new community group.

That’s because the standard pop-up roof, small kitchen area, and fold out bottom bed works so well. But at this year’s Düsseldorf Caravan Salon—the biggest and most innovative camper trade show in the world—the German conversion shop Kompanja came up with a truly unique idea: a movie theater.

Built on the Renault Trafic, the Kompanja van features a projector system that turns the pop-up roof into an indoor or outdoor movie theater. It’s a simple and nifty innovation that provides something you didn’t even know you wanted: The ability to watch a movie around the camp fire. The LF projector is mounted on magnets and the screen is dual-sided, so you can watch it from inside the roof bed or from outside the van on the front wall of the pop-up roof. The system costs about $1,690 extra as an add-on option.

When it’s configured as a camper, the Kompanja uses two individual rear seats (not a bench) that create a living room when you swivel the front cabin seats around. A removable dining table is helpful for working and eating, and at night a double bed takes up the lower living area space at about 79 inches long. This bed also functions as what Kompanja calls a Bivouac Bed, stretching out above the tailgate of the van so you can sleep in the fresh air. Two other people can sleep in the rooftop area.

The kitchens are never that large in these smaller camper vans, so Kompanja puts the compact kitchen just inside the sliding door so that you can cook inside or out. It’s not much but it does the job with a refrigerator and single-burner stove, both of which can be accessed inside or outside the van thanks to slide-outs and a fold-down table. You also get the standard cabinets and storage compartments in the living area and trunk, although you’re never going to be able to haul as much gear as you can in the larger conversion vans.

The Kompanja camper starts at $49,000 for the base and a lengthy list of upgrade options.
Ready to make a splash?

The most surprising—and fun—campers are the ones that do something, whether it’s as simple as a pop up roof or a modular camper that unfolds to sleep a family. Other campers take the concept even further, spinning to reveal a two-bedroom tiny house; expanding to three times their size; or inflating by itself in seconds. Love campers and trailers? Come join our community group.

And then their is the ultimate “do something” camper, one that functions not only as an RV but as something else entirely: the boat camper. We’ve covered the compact Sealandar caravan in the past, and now we’ve found a larger version made by Germany-based Caravanboat that combines a camper and houseboat in one.

Called Departure One, the 30-foot long camper sits on a trailer and consists of a seawater resistant aluminum hull. The inside can sleep four people and a small shower and washbasin sits just behind the sleeping area. A closet provides room for clothes and gear, and a kitchen boasts a sink, microwave, fridge, stovetop, and storage for cooking tools. A fairly spacious living room can also provide more sleeping options, while more cabinets and LED lights bring the comforts of home.

The one extra spot not usually found in campers is the boat steering wheel, which looks out the front of the camper and huge plexiglass windows. Those same panorama windows also include a wing door window to allow access in and out. The abundance of windows makes the camper feel more boat-like, as does the rooftop deck complete with seats and solar power.

Other amenities—like a backup camera—are more typical of a camper, so it’s clear that in many ways the Departure One brings together the best of both worlds. A few different color options are available and the starting price is $67,448. Of course, that’s the price in Europe and the campers aren’t available here in the U.S., but it’s always fun to see how designers across the pond are innovating.
New technology reduces towing strain

Camper lovers in the U.S. may be packing for a last summer hurrah this Labor Day weekend, but over in Europe tens of thousands of people are visiting the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon. As the biggest camper trade show in the world, the annual event showcases just about every type of camper imaginable, from tiny trailers to huge, expedition-ready caravans. Love campers and trailers? Come join our new community group.

And while we always love seeing the new campers on the market—like Volkswagen’s new Grand California—one of the best parts about the Düsseldorf show is the debut of concept campers. Ambitious, innovative, and yet-to-be-produced, concept campers show where the industry is headed. And at this year’s show, it’s clear that the future of campers is looking a lot more green.

It’s ironic that so many adventurers spend time outdoors by using gas-guzzling, giant RVs that are detrimental to the environment. Even small camper trailers reduce the efficiency and range of your vehicle, meaning that you’ll use more gas just because you’re towing a camper.

Germany-based camper manufacturer Dethleffs has been working on this problem. Last year, the company debuted the e.Home Type C, a motorhome powered by head-to-toe solar panels affixed to the camper’s exterior. This year Dethleffs is shaking up the industry with the E.Home Coco, a small trailer that’s 100% electric. The camper uses a floor-mounted lithium battery, rooftop solar panels, and a dual-motor axle instead of a regular ‘ol tow package.

Why would a trailer need to be electric, you ask? It’s not as if it has an engine. Dethleffs says that adding electric motive power will decrease the towing demands of the camper and make handling better while driving. This makes sense because the 80-kWh battery pack sends power to the electrified axle, essentially making the camper spin its own wheels and cutting down the tow load on your vehicle.

In a real life example used by Dethleffs, this means that if you’re normally towing 2,000 pounds, the electrified E.Home Coco would reduce that tow weight to about 220 pounds. Instead of needing a huge truck to pull a trailer, you could use a smaller—even an electric—vehicle. While the Tesla Model X is an all-electric vehicle that can tow around 3,500 pounds, most other electric cars just don’t have the capacity. With the tech behind the E.Home Coco, that becomes possible.

Once at camp, the advantages of an electric trailer pile on. Thanks to its electric powertrain, the camper uses its own power to park into a camping spot, no towing needed. Just control the camper using an app and park it wherever you’d like, no matter how tight the space. And the E.Home Coco’s big battery and solar panels can run lots of the things you need a camp, like heating, cooling, and cook tops. Back at home, Dethleffs says the camper’s battery pack could be used as a home energy storage system.

Of course, all of this is still in the research stage, and Dethleffs says roading testing will start in 2019 to confirm how the electric camper influences range and efficiency. But in an industry that’s all about getting outside and enjoying our natural environment, it’s inspiring to see a camper that could live up to environmentally-friendly standards of true sustainability.

Called the Harmony 3, Bürstner debuted the chic camper at this year’s Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, the world’s biggest camper trade show. From the outside, the Harmony 3 is a sleek camping trailer with large picture windows. Step inside, however, and it feels like you’ve walked into a New York City apartment.

Through the entryway you’ll find hanging lamps, a removable dining table, and the trailer’s unique walls that feature a faux-stone treatment. The kitchen boasts an induction cooktop, built-in espresso maker, and a fancy-schmancy wine rack. A living room with a huge couch comes next, and a coffee table—seriously, what camper has that?—sits in between the sitting area and TV.

A bed drops from the ceiling, eliminating the need for a separate bedroom.

The living room is so spacious because it also functions as the bedroom; but instead of using a fold-out couch, a queen bed drops from the ceiling over the coffee table. This creates a hanging bed platform that floats in the center of the camper and pushes back up when not in use. The lack of a separate bedroom also leaves more room for a bathroom, and the Harmony 3’s spacious water closet includes a large shower and backlit lighting.

Like many of the concept campers at trade shows, the Harmony 3 isn’t in production and will likely remain in the design stage for a while. Some of the features—like pendant lamps, coffee tables, and even the drop-down bed—will take some advanced engineering to work in a manufactured camper. Those types of items are hard to secure in a moving vehicle. But Bürstner shows that the future of camper design just might look a lot like home.
